Winners of the first round of the Vice Chancellor's awards were delighted to receive their certificates from Professor Mike Thorne at the summer parties on the Cambridge and Chelmsford campuses on June 20 and 27.

The awards, which acknowledge outstanding contributions to our community, were won by both teams and individuals. Nigel Cooper, chaplain, who won an award in the category ‘Our University community', commented, ‘I'd like to try and find some words that aren't "I feel honoured" but that's what I mean. I really enjoy being at Anglia Ruskin.'

Deborah Barker from the team ‘Cheap as Chips', a student support team which won for their innovative approach to offering students financial advice, won in the category ‘Our students' experience of studying at Anglia Ruskin University'. Deborah commented on winning the award: ‘We're all so pleased to have won. It's great to be acknowledged for the commitment and extra work it has taken to get ‘Cheap as Chips' up and running. We all think ‘Cheap as Chips' is great and we are glad that the VC thinks it is worthy of a VC award.' Sheryl Wilby, also from the ‘Cheap as Chips' team, added that she felt honoured to have won and that the team's hard work had been recognised and rewarded. The other team members are Debbie Burden and Lesley Green.
Another team to win an award was ‘Music Therapy for Homeless People', comprising Dr Helen Odell-Miller, Billy Davidson and Helen Loth, who won in the category ‘Our University in the local community'. The ‘Music Therapy for Homeless People' project is part of a wider contribution made by the music therapy team to the local community, through their clinical and educational participation in social care, health care, and with children and families, in both the voluntary and statutory sector. Billy Davidson commented: ‘The award is gratefully received and highlights the achievements that we, as a team, have made during the last year. Music therapy has been and still is an important part of life at wintercomfort day centre for the homeless. People who have contributed and taken part in the music therapy sessions have greatly benefited from this intervention. It is an honour to be recognised by the VC awards.' Team member Helen Loth emphasised how pleased they were that the University was recognising broader links with the community through projects such as theirs, which link academic and clinical practice.
The winners of the Vice Chancellor's awards presented at the Chelmsford campus ceremony (left to right): Deborah Barker, Lesley Green, Sheryl Wilby, Debbie Burden, (Vice Chancellor Professor Mike Thorne), Dr Tom Mortimer and Andrew Brady.
Award winners Derrik Ferney (‘Our University community), Mahmoud Al-Kilani and Dr Paul Saw of the European Business Association, Cambridge (‘Our students' experience of studying at Anglia Ruskin University'), and Professor Marcian Cirstea (‘Our University in the international community) all expressed their delight and appreciation at winning the awards, and this demonstration of the value of their work to our University.
Dr Tom Mortimer (‘Our students' experience of studying at Anglia Ruskin University') also wished to thank his MA Corporate Governance/GradICSA students for nominating him, and ‘John Fairhurst, Head of Law and Kathy Quinlan, Deputy Head of Law, for allowing me to continue working with the MA students for this Academic Year.'
Lastly, Andrew Brady (‘Our University in the local community'), who over the last two years has led a number of programmes within the 3rd sector, commented ‘...3rd Sector organisations help keep society together and make communities work, so it's great that the University has recognised the work 3rd Sector Futures has done with charities and social enterprises.'
