We are currently rolling out the use of TurnitinUK as part of our campaign to support the improvement of the academic skills of our students, and we are also piloting the use of TurnitinUK GradeMark for e-submission. Information and downloads are available on this page.

What is TurnitinUK?
TurnitinUK is an online service with a number of features which assist in the development of academic good practice and improvements in learning and assessment practice. One feature of particular use to us is the ‘Originality Check', whereby student written work can be matched against millions of worldwide, online sources such as web pages, online books and journals, and papers submitted by other students. Turnitin also offers an e-submission and online marking facility.
How are we using TurnitinUK GradeMark for e-submission and online marking?
TurntinUK offers a facility for e-submission and online marking through Turnitin GradeMark. We are currently piloting this with a number of pathways. Students will use their Turnitin accounts in the same way for both e-submission and text matching, however there are some administrative differences in how each will work. Contact your Faculty lead (below) for detailed information on your faculty's e-submission pilots.
How are we using the TurnitinUK text matching service?
Prior to their first written summative assessment, students may submit a formative written assignment (in any of the most common text document formats) to TurnitinUK. Usually within a few minutes, TurnitinUK will produce an ‘originality report' (OR), which clearly shows the extent to which passages in the student's work match with others on the Turnitin database.
Students are encouraged to discuss the OR with their personal tutor to see where they may need to improve their academic practice. However, some caution is necessary in interpreting the reports since some degree of matching of text - for example, in references or quoted passages - should be expected. View the interpretation of TurnitinUK Originality Reports video Students may also work through a quick online exercise to help them interpret their Originality Report. Any evidence of poor academic practice in the Originality Reports for these formative assignments will not be viewed as assessment offences.
Subsequently students may use Turnitin to check their work before submission, whenever they wish.
What do I need to do?
TurnitinUK cannot accept random submissions. Faculties need to set up online ‘classes', to which students can enrol, and must set an assignment before students can submit their work.
For text matching purposes, most Faculties have set up one general class and assignment for all students, and have identified a number of specific classes for the formative assignments. Contact your faculty administrator for details.
For the e-submission pilots, all the administrative work - creating classes and assignments, and joining students, will be carried out centrally.
Contact your Turnitin Lead for information on how your Faculty is implementing Turnitin for text matching and piloting e-submission.

In order for students to be able to submit to your class, you must:
1. Set up your Turnitin account
Most Faculty staff will require an Instructor account. On request, your Faculty TurnitinUK administrator will send you a joining email with instructions on how to activate your Instructor status with TurnitinUK.
Once you receive your joining email with the account and password information, access Turnitin through the link in the Application Links section of My.Anglia, and create your own, new user profile via the ‘new user' link, at the top right hand side of the page.
2. Create a class and an assignment
Classes and assignments for e-submission through GradeMark will be created centrally and students will be automatically enrolled.
For text matching purposes only, students will need a class and an assignment to which students can upload their work. This could be created by you - their tutor - and / or by your Faculty administrator. See our short, 2 minute videos and the Instructors Guide to Setting Up Classes and Assignments (.pdf) for full information on this procedure.
For text matching purposes, students will need the Class ID (automatically generated) and the Class password (generated by you or the Faculty administrator) to enable them to enrol in a class.
See our Staff FAQs for further information.
How do students submit to a Class?
In order to submit to a class, students must have their own Turnitin account. For e-submission through GradeMark, student accounts will be created centrally.
If students are not using GradeMark, but wish to use the text matching service, they will need to create their account using a Class ID and a Class password given to them by the class instructor. (There is no need for students to have two accounts. Any accounts they have created, or that have been created for them, will merge so long as the account details used - name and email address - are identical.)
Once students have a Turnitin account, they can enrol in future classes at any time, so long as they have been given the appropriate Class ID and Class password, or - as for GradeMark - the class has been uploaded to their account centrally.
We have made available a step by step guide for students (.pdf) and a video on enrolling and submitting a paper. There is also a step by step GradeMark Quick Start Guide to e-Submission for students submitting a paper to Turnitin GradeMark.
See our Student FAQs for further information.
