In this occasional paper, Derrik Ferney contrasts two styles of behaviour: contemplative, free thinking, individualistic and spiritual, as opposed to doctrinaire, compliant, bureaucratic and temporal.

He examines how this archetypal distinction is recognisable in aspects of organisational behaviour in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), focusing on the Learning and Teaching (L&T) community and the Quality Assurance (QA) community.
